Eleanor Bentall is a London based photographer who specializes in portraiture and reportage. Some of her best photographs are intimate, insightful portraits of people in their home or working environments. Her work has been praised for capturing the emotion and humour in the lives of her subjects, be they celebrities or nurses on a nightshift in an NHS hospital. She grew up in New Zealand, where she initially trained and worked as a journalist. She then moved to the UK and attended the Newport Documentary Photography course. After leaving Newport, she worked at Magnum Photos as a picture researcher, a role that also gave her opportunities to develop as a photographer, such as assisting Sebastiao Salgado. In 1993 she left Magnum and began a longstanding relationship with The Daily Telegraph, where she has since worked as both a freelance and contract photographer, specializing in features and celebrity portraiture. During this time her other clients included Lambeth Palace who commissioned her for the official portraits of both the current and previous Archbishops of Canterbury. While based primarily in London, Eleanor recently spent 2 years living and working in the USA, where her assignments included covering the last presidential elections for the Telegraph. She also developed her personal work. Passionate about train travel and the environmental effects of over-reliance on the automobile, one project involved photographing the great, transcontinental train routes across North America, now under threat due to lack of federal funding. She is now a freelance photographer in London, with clients in the editorial, corporate and charity sectors. This year her work has included a trip to Brazil for an aid organisation and working on a documentary film in India.
